Down to Deadwood, and back up at closing time
Terry Peak sits about six miles from Deadwood, and nearly everyone staying up here makes the same two trips. Down the hill for dinner or the casino floor, then back up again when the night is over. The second one is worth booking in advance. Late on a Saturday a lot of people want to leave town at the same moment, and a ride back up a mountain road is the hardest one to find on short notice.
Give us the cabin address and the time you want to be collected. We confirm it, and a driver is assigned to your trip instead of you joining the queue at 11 p.m.
Ski-in, ski-out means nothing is walkable
The chalets and slope-side homes on Terry Peak are a wonderful place to wake up and a difficult place to get a sandwich. There is no row of restaurants at the bottom of the driveway. Guests who flew in, took a ride from the airport and have no car tend to discover this on the first evening.
That is most of what we do up here: the grocery run, the restaurant run, and the trip into Lead or Deadwood and back. Short trips are fine. No trip is too small.
The mountain road in winter
Terry Peak is one of the higher points in the northern Black Hills and the road up behaves like it. Snow arrives earlier and lingers later than it does in town, and it is the grade that catches people out in a rental car on summer tires.
Our cars are AWD and 4WD and kept ready for it, and our drivers run these grades all winter. If a storm is forecast for the night you meant to go out, book the ride instead of hoping something is free once the snow starts.
Airport runs from the mountain
Most guests fly into Rapid City Regional (RAP). Booked ahead, we meet the flight and bring you and your bags straight up to the cabin, and at the end of the week we time the run back down to your departure rather than to checkout. Deadwood to RAP is about 52 miles and an hour; from Terry Peak, add the run down the hill. That route is detailed on the Deadwood to Rapid City Airport page.
Groups in the big chalets
Plenty of the rentals on Terry Peak sleep a group rather than a couple, and a group that arrived together usually wants to go into Deadwood together. Tell us how many are riding when you book, so the trip is planned properly rather than worked out at the curb.
What to know
- Have the street address, not the listing nickname. Terry Peak rentals are advertised under names we cannot look up. We need the address the county uses.
- Book the ride back up. That is the one that gets scarce late on a weekend.
- Flat price, quoted before you ride. A Saturday in February costs the same as a Tuesday in June.
- Card or cash. We take both; late-night fares are collected up front.
