Twenty miles of canyon with almost no addresses

US-14A runs through Spearfish Canyon from Spearfish down to Cheyenne Crossing, past Bridal Veil Falls, Spearfish Falls and Roughlock Falls. The canyon entrance is 13 miles from Spearfish and roughly 15 miles from Deadwood. Along that whole stretch there are a handful of named places and very little else, which is why "the pullout past the second falls" is a real pickup location here and a useless one anywhere else.

Savoy, the lodge and the Latchstring

Savoy is the middle of the canyon and the part with a name. Spearfish Canyon Lodge sits there, the Latchstring Restaurant is inside it, and the trailheads for Roughlock Falls and Spearfish Falls start from the same parking area. Most of our canyon work is the run down from Deadwood or Lead for dinner at the Latchstring and the run back afterwards.

Hikes that end where they did not start

The good walks in this canyon are one-way. Roughlock Falls is an easy two-mile out and back, but plenty of people would rather be dropped at one trailhead and collected at another, and the '76 Trail and the canyon floor both work better that way. Tell us both ends and roughly when you expect to finish.

Phone signal in the canyon is patchy. Agree the pickup before you walk in.

Weddings at the lodge

Spearfish Canyon is on our wedding transportation page for a reason. Guests stay in Deadwood, Lead or Spearfish and the ceremony is down in the canyon, which means a shuttle in both directions and a late run home for people who have been drinking on a mountain road in the dark.

The drive in winter

US-14A is ploughed, and it is still a canyon road with ice in the shaded curves well after the main highways have dried out. Northern Hills Taxi runs AWD and 4WD. If you want the fall colours or a frozen Bridal Veil Falls and you do not want to drive it yourself, that is a scenic run we quote by the trip.

What to know

  • Name the landmark, not the mile marker. Savoy, the lodge, Bridal Veil, Cheyenne Crossing.
  • Agree the pickup before you lose signal. The canyon swallows phone service.
  • Flat price, quoted before you ride. No surge for a late night or a busy weekend.
  • Card or cash. Late-night fares are collected up front.
