The lifts at Deer Mountain seldom run. People book cabins here anyway, for the quiet and the price, and because Terry Peak is a short drive up the road when anyone does want to ski. Where Terry Peak has hundreds of rentals stacked around its slopes, Deer Mountain has a few dozen cabins spread thin along one road. That is why people book it, and it is also why getting anywhere from here needs a plan rather than a hopeful look at a rideshare app.
You are further out than you think
The cabins here feel remote because they are. There is no walk to a restaurant, no walk to a shop, and on a January night no walk to anywhere at all. Guests who assumed they could stroll somewhere for dinner usually call 605-717-1717 on the first evening, and that call is the whole reason this page exists.
We run the trip into Lead and the trip on into Deadwood, we run the grocery and liquor-store runs, and we come back for you afterwards. Tell us the return time when you book and it is already arranged.
Into Lead first, Deadwood after
Lead is the nearer town and the easier errand. The shop, a meal, the Homestake overlook. Deadwood is the longer trip and the one people make for the evening, out to Main Street and the casinos. Plenty of groups do both in one night, into Lead early and on to Deadwood after, and either way it is a flat price quoted before you ride.
Deer Mountain Road in the snow
Deer Mountain Road is the reason a local driver matters here. It is quieter than the Terry Peak side, which sounds pleasant until it means fewer cars have been over it since the last snowfall. Airport runs, booked at both ends
Rapid City Regional (RAP) is the flight for nearly everyone. Because Deer Mountain is thinly served, book both directions when you book the cabin. What to know
- Reserve the return leg at the same time as the outbound. On Deer Mountain Road that matters more than it does closer to town.
- Give us the street address. A cabin name or a dropped pin is not enough on this road.
- Flat price, quoted before you ride. No surge for a late night, a holiday or a busy weekend.
