Bellefish Road is not Belle Fourche

Two names get confused on this phone every season. Bellefish Road sits off Maitland Road between Deadwood and Lead, about ten minutes from either town. Belle Fourche is a city 66 miles away, an hour and ten minutes north, with its own airport run and its own page. Booking one when you meant the other is the difference between a short hop and a long fare.

Say "Bellefish, off Maitland" when you book and we will know.

The road is the reason you are reading this

Maitland Road climbs. It is steep in places, the switchbacks are tight enough that a long vehicle has to think about them, and after a wet spring the ruts are real. None of that is a problem for a driver who runs it weekly. It is a serious problem for a rental sedan with two inches of clearance and a visitor who has never seen the road in daylight.

This is the single most common reason people up here call a taxi instead of driving themselves, and it is why a rideshare that accepted the trip in Deadwood sometimes turns around before it arrives.

Cabins on acreage, not a subdivision

The rentals along Maitland and Bellefish are spread out on their own land rather than packed into a loop. Bellefish Pines sits on three acres. That space is the appeal, and it also means your neighbour is not close enough to give you a lift into town, and there is no clubhouse and no shuttle.

Into Deadwood and Lead

Deadwood is the evening trip, for Main Street and the casinos. Lead is the shorter errand, for the shop or a meal. Both are close enough that people staying on Maitland assume they can drive after a drink, which is exactly the assumption this road punishes. Book the return leg when you book the outbound and the question never comes up.

Winter, and what we will tell you honestly

Snow sits on Maitland Road after it has cleared in Deadwood, and the grade is the part that catches people. Northern Hills Taxi runs AWD and 4WD all winter. If the forecast is bad, give us the cabin address when you reserve and we will say plainly whether we can get up there that night rather than finding out at the bottom of the hill.

Airport runs

Rapid City Regional (RAP) is about 52 miles from Deadwood and roughly an hour, and Maitland adds the climb at the end. Booked ahead we meet the flight and bring you and your bags up, and we time the departure run to the flight rather than to checkout. Route detail sits on the Deadwood to Rapid City Airport page.

What to know

  • Say Bellefish or Maitland, not Belle Fourche. One is ten minutes away and the other is 66 miles.
  • Give the street address. These cabins sit on acreage and a dropped pin often lands on the wrong drive.
  • Book the ride back. This is not a road to drive after an evening in Deadwood.
  • Card or cash. Late-night fares are collected up front.
